This post is all about things to get rid of to make your home look less cluttered.
If you do a quick scan of any given room in your home, how does it make you feel?
If “overwhelmed,” “anxious,” or “overstimulated,” come to mind, that could be a sign it’s time for a quick minimalist decluttering session.
What many people get wrong when it comes to home decor or home organization, is that they think they need more organizational solutions (think: boxes, drawer dividers, furniture with extra storage areas).
While storage solutions can be great, the chances are, in most cases, you don’t need more storage, you NEED LESS STUFF TO ORGANIZE.
While this might not be easy to hear for some, it’s the brutal truth.
The good news you ask?
It’s never too late to start decluttering and begin living a more minimalist, simple lifestyle.
It all starts at your home base.
Let’s be real, the people who live the most simple, stress-free lives, are usually consistently simple in other areas such as their home, their work, and their relationships.
The best way to start decluttering your life is to get rid of things in your home that don’t serve a purpose, and just take up space.
Read on for a birds eye perspective of 5 fast and easy things you can get rid of TODAY, that will make your home feel all-around less cluttered.
Pro tip: To keep yourself from feeling overwhelmed. Set yourself a 30 minute timer and declutter as much as you can during that time! You can always repeat once a week or month as needed.

1. Knick Knacks
Knick knacks are the number one thing you can eliminate that will make your home look less cluttered.
If you are wondering what knick knacks are, let me break it down.
Any small, purpose-less object that is sitting out in your home on your shelves or furniture surfaces.
Some examples are:
- Ornaments
- Figurines
- Small photo frames
- Small decor pieces
- Cannisters
- Decorative plates, bowls, cups
This is not to say you have to get rid of every item that falls under the knick knack category. The ones with actual high sentimental value can be tucked away in storage.
For the most part though, these items should not be visible in hour home if you want to give a minimalist, clutter-free vibe.
2. Unused Appliances
Do yourself a favor and rid your home of all the appliances you don’t use regularly.
Chances are, if you haven’t used that kitchen aid mixer or nutribullet blender in the last 6-8 months, it probably odens’t need to be taking up space in your home.
I regularly see homes with extra appliances (overflow from what won’t fit in your cabinets of course) sitting out on counter surfaces, and these items really can make the kitchen look so cluttered.
3. Non-Functional Furniture
Another quick and easy thing to get rid of for decluttering purposes is furniture pieces that do not serve a functional purpose.
Chairs and couches serve the purpose of giving you a place to sit down.
A tv console serves the purpose of giving your tv a place to stand.
Coffee tables and end tables offer areas to set your drinks or items you’re using.
However, storage bins, bookcases, and extra console tables most likely do not serve any specific purpose other than holding more stuff.
If you’re in question about whether or not a piece of furniture serves a purpose, you probably have your answer.
Go ahead and get rid of extra furniture to free up some space!
4. Anything sitting out on counters
This one might be somewhat specific to bathrooms and kitchens, but it sure is a great, easy decluttering tip.
Get rid of anything extra sitting out on kitchen or bathroom counters that you already have in your cabinets (think: cups, plates, cooking utensils, food, makeup, lotions, toothpaste, hairbrushes, etc.).
I try my best to maintain bare countertops in my kitchen and bathroom (well, realistically about 85% bare), and this does wonders for making my home look clean and minimal.
5. Papers
If you have papers laying around on surfaces throughout your home, it only takes a few to makes the space look very unorganized and cluttered.
These could be bills, to do lists, receipts/invoices, etc. or in some cases even books and magazines.
The best way to avoid this is to have a designated spot in your home for papers (preferably in an office file cabinet or desk drawer).
Even better, convert to paperless billing and opt for electronic EOBs, notifications, statements, and insurance disclosures, etc.
This in itself will greatly reduce the amount of papers that collect in your home.
