This post is all about how to host a holiday party for friends.

If you are anything like me, the last thing I want to do is spend hours stressing over how to host a holiday party for friends and family.

While some people might be big on hosting and love diving in to every little detail and buying tons of decor, etc., that’s just not me.

If I’m the one doing the hosting, it’s definitely going to be a simple, stress-free event with *just enough* to make it a wonderful gathering.

This guide is perfect for those like me who are more minimalist and believe in the power of simplicity.

It’s also great for anyone who is throwing together a last minute holiday party or friendsgiving.

So without further ado, let’s get into everything you need to know for how to host a holiday party that is simple and stress free!

1. Put together your guest list and narrow down a date.

The first step to executing the party is by finding a date that works for your guests to attend, as well as pinpointing exactly who you want your guests to be.

The easiest way to do this is by writing out a guest list in your notes app or a physical piece of paper and then sending out a group text poll with 3 date options to have your guests vote on which day they can attend.

After the poll results are in, you have your chosen date by whichever date the most people can attend.

2. Send out an official invite.

The easiest way to do this is with a groupchat.

If you want to get fancy, you can put together an actual event invitations on free platforms like Evite or Partiful.

However, there’s really no need to sign up for a fancy platform to send out invites.

Keep it simple by starting a group chat (you can change the background to a cute holiday background) and change the chat name to “X’s Holiday Party X/XX/2025.”

Copy and paste this simple template below to send out your text:

“Hey! I’m hosting a Friendsgiving/Holiday Party and would love for you to come 🎉✨

📅 Date: ____

⏰ Time: ____

📍 Location: my basement (address: ______)

We’ll eat, hang out, and do a Secret Santa gift exchange (keep gifts around $20).

Let me know if you can make it + what dish you want to bring! ❤️”

3. Decide on a holiday party theme.

I love the idea of hosting a holiday party with a neutral theme.

This way, you can use the decor for any type of holiday party (Thanksgiving or Christmas).

Think: warm, cozy, minimal holiday with soft lights + greenery + warm neutral tones.

The great thing about this theme is, depending on your decor style, you can most likely pull from decor pieces you already have sitting around or in storage.

For example:

  • Warm white string lights around the perimeter of the basement
  • A few battery-operated LED candles for soft glow
  • Folding tables with simple white or beige tablecloths
  • Greenery garlands (real or faux) down the center
  • Pine cones + gold or black candle holders as accents
  • Simple place cards (craft paper + Sharpie)
  • One statement holiday banner: “Happy Friendsgiving!” or “Holiday Hangout”
  • Minimalist wreath on one wall or door
  • Optional photo backdrop: string lights + neutral curtain + paper snowflakes

4. Gather the Decor.

Here’s a decor shopping list of affordable/easy items to copy and paste into your Notes app for your Dollar Tree/Target party-prep run:

  • Photo backdrop supplies: curtain + lights
  • 2–3 sets warm white string lights
  • Faux greenery garland
  • Candle holders + LED candles
  • Holiday banner
  • Tablecloths (white or neutral)
  • Mini pinecones (or collect outside!)
  • Throw blankets
  • Fuzzy socks (5–10 pairs)
  • Gift table basket
  • Chalkboard sign

You can also set up a small table near the entrance to use as a station. If you are hosting a Christmas party, use the small table for placing secret Santa gifts. Just decorate the table with red/green/neutral ribbons, have a small chalkboard sign that says “Secret Santa Drop-Off” and place a bowl with numbers for the gift draw.

If you have a couch or chairs in the basement, you can set up a cozy lounge area with candles, a couple of soft throw blankets, and a basket of cheap fuzzy socks for a cute “cozy corner” detail.

5. Decide on a Simple Menu.

Choose what you want to personally make first. Keep it simple and guests can fill in the rest.

For example, foods you might provide:

  • Charcuterie-style snack board
  • Rolls or bread
  • Simple salad
  • 1–2 side dishes
  • A dessert (cookies or brownies)

Potluck Options for Guests: Send people items in categories to avoid duplicates

  • Turkey or ham
  • Mashed potatoes
  • Mac & cheese
  • Stuffing
  • Veggie side
  • Dessert
  • Drinks

6. Stay on Track of Your Holiday Party Hosting Timeline.

Use your calendar or Notes app to keep yourself on track for what to do in the time leading up to hosting your holiday party.

For example:

1 Week Before:

  • Send final reminders to guests
  • Assign potluck dishes (if you’re doing potluck–recommended!)
  • Buy decor items online or in-store

2–3 Days Before:

  • Deep clean basement or holiday party area
  • Set up furniture layout
  • Prep refrigerated desserts or sides
  • Set up photo backdrop and Secret Santa table

Day Before:

  • Put up all lighting
  • Arrange tables, garlands, and place settings
  • Chop veggies or prepare easy appetizers
  • Set up drink area

Day Of:

  • Turn on lights & candles
  • Heat up food

7. Decide on a Simple Party Flow and Let the Party Begin!

It’s time to Party!

As your guests arrive, greet them with a cute holiday cocktail drink/station and have soft holiday playlist in the background (instrumental or chill classics). I love the Coffee Shop Christmas Jazz Music playlist on Spotify.

  1. Guests arrive
  2. Light snacks, chatting, and cocktail hour
  3. Dinner/Potluck
  4. Secret Santa or White Elephant exchange
  5. Photo backdrop group photos
  6. Games (Heads Up, Charades, Card games)
  7. Dessert/coffee/hot cocoa
