That’s most likely right around the time you start researching ways to slow down aging.

Trust me I’ve been there.

Err, well, I’m currently there.

Everyone knows that taking care of your skin and a good skincare routine is one of the best, and most talked about, ways to slow down aging.

But what about other, non skincare-related, anti-aging tips?

There are honestly a good number of ways to slow down aging that have nothing to do with skincare.

Below I’m diving into some unexpected ways to prevent aging, that you can easily start incorporating into your daily life today!

Can You Slow Down Aging?

Luckily, the honest answer to this is, YES!

You can absolutely slow down aging, and it’s not as difficult as you might think.

Genetics do play a role in it, but there are also a lot of things within your control that can seriously add years, or decades even, to your youthful glow.

The best news: you don’t have to make crazy-aggressive lifestyle changes, and you most definitely don’t have to spend hundreds of dollars on anti-aging skincare products.

The best anti-aging tips come down to easy, actionable tips that are basically “do more of this” and “do less of that.”

How to Slow Down Aging

Let’s get into the nitty gritty of what to do and what not to do to slow down aging.

1. Get More Sleep

I’ve added this tip as number one for a reason, and I truly believe it makes the most difference when it comes to aging gracefully.

If you are getting under 8 hours per sleep every night, you are potentially causing premature aging of your body.

Sleep is the time your body regenerates itself, down to on a cellular level.

If you are cutting yourself short on Z’s, I highly recommend prioritizing getting a minimum of 8 hour of sleep every night.

2. Quit Smoking

Breaking news: Smoking cigarettes and vaping is making you look older!!!

Don’t blame the messenger, but it’s true.

Smoking is scientifically proven to accelerate biological aging, as it is a free radical and causes oxidative stress and an inflammatory response in your body.

This is something you undeniably have total control over, and it should be a non-negotiable for not just anti-aging, but for your overall health.

3. Reduce Stress

This one is a little more difficult, as not everyone has total control over the amount of stress in their life.

However, there are most definitely things you can do to cut down on your amount of stress as well as ways to manage it.

It’s about reducing hour mental load and exactly how to make life less stressful.

4. Prioritize a Clean Home

Your home is your oasis.

Or at least it should be.

Most people spend at least 10-12 hours a day in their home, and the advantage of this is that you have control over making your home environment a clean and healthy one.

A toxic home or environment can contribute to free radicals and oxidative stress which will speed up aging.

Some quick actionable tips to start right now include:

  • Don’t wear shoes in the house
  • Stop burning toxic candles and using highly fragranced plugins, aerosols, etc.
  • Don’t smoke (ever) but especially in the house

5. Use a Humidifier

Humidifiers are an easy way to add moisture to the air in your home, which in turn moisturizes your skin and delays aging.

6. Eat More Leafy Green Vegetables

Leafy green vegetables contain antioxidants which has been proven to be good for cellular health and slows aging.

Some example of green vegetables that you can easily add to your daily diet include:

  • Spinach
  • Kale
  • Arugula
  • Romaine Lettuce

7. Drink Coffee

Studies have shown that drinking coffee can undoubtedly slow down aging.

According to this article by Science Direct, having one to three cups of coffee a day could lower a person’s chances of dying by around 15% within the following nine to 11 years, in comparison to those who didn’t consume the drink.

I don’t know about you, but that’s a statistic I can get behind.

I love my morning coffee and if it happens to have added perks for anti-aging, I’m here for it!

8. Consume Less Sugar

Eating processed sugars has been shown to be not only extremely unhealthy for your body as a whole, but it can increase the rate at which you age by triggering a process called glycation.

Glycation is linked to the visible signs of aging such as reduced skin elasticity and increased sun damage.

9. Exercise Regularly

Research has shown that those who live a sedentary lifestyle age quicker biologically. This is due to the affect of low physical activity on DNA, specifically shortened telomeres, which significantly speeds up the aging process.

Even if you are doing something as simple as aiming to get 8-10k steps in per day, or having a 30 minute per day exercise goal, this can work wonders when it comes to anti-aging.

10. Eat More Spicy Food

Studies have shown that regular consumption of spicy food offers anti aging benefits and a reduced biological age.

As long as it is not affecting your digestive system in a negative way, start adding in spicy foods to your diet such as jalapeños, black pepper, chili peppers (as well as chili powder, chili sauce & chili oil, and wasabi.

11. Wait Longer to Have Kids

This anti-aging tip might be a little controversial, but those who wait longer to have kids typically age better.

Taking on the role of parenthood typically comes with many sacrifices such as reduced sleep, economic stress, and less prioritization of self care.

All of the above can contribute negatively to aging.

12. Prioritize Your Social Life

Those who prioritize their social life are typically not just happier, but they age slower.

High social engagement through strong friendships, support systems, and community involvement has been associated with slower biological aging.

Who is more at risk of aging prematurely?

The people most at risk of aging prematurely typically fall into one of the following categories:

  • Have fair skin
  • Have blonde/light hair color
  • Are women (thanks to menopause)
  • Live a sedentary lifestyle
  • Are frequently exposed to pollutants
  • Are in a lower wealth class/have more economic stress

The good news is, even if you do happen to fall into one of the above categories, it doesn’t mean you will automatically age faster.

It just means you may want to take more precaution and might be a little more sensitive to aging.

Bonus tips for slowing down the aging process naturally

I love the ideas of knowledge is power.

This is especially true when it comes to aging.

Those who know more, and obviously care more, already have an advantage when it comes to remaining youthful.

Whether it’s through educating yourself on the newest anti-aging tips and technologies, or just simply taking more precautions, it can prove valuable to not just your physical appearance but your overall health.

Therefore, the best anti-aging tip out there might just be one that can’t be learned about.

Rather, a deep, innate care and willingness to do what it takes to preserve your glow.
